They say you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.
It seems that Honda didn’t get the memo. Meet the all-new 2016 HR-V, Honda’s the new compact crossover that straddles the border between Honda’s other two wildly popular crossovers SUV’s: the Honda Fit and Honda CR-V. Make no mistake about it though: The HR-V is its own vehicle, all grown up and ready to see the world. Also, because this review cannot help but to be a demonstration in necessary information overload (in a great way, we promise!), it comes in three extremely well equipped trims: the LX, EX and the top-of-the- line EX-L.
“Multi-dimensional purpose” is a most fitting description for the 2016 HR-V, whether you are loading up five passengers for seating to capacity or taking full advantage of the ample cargo space, there is a great deal you can accomplish with this versatile “little” powerhouse and the multiple seating/cargo modes. With 100.1 cu.-ft. of passenger space and 58.8 cu.-ft. of cargo volume (LX FWD) with the 2nd-Row seats folded down, the HR-V was designed and built for maximum accommodation.
Standing on the outside looking in, the HR-V has pronounced stance in the 102.8-inches wheelbase, 6.7 inch ground clearance, and standing “tall” in 17in allow wheels, granting an overall visage of toughness without skimping on the style. Its contour lines standout and provide a look that goes well beyond the “sporty” image so for which it is so commonly associated. Even the hatchback provides an air of elegance, designed an entrance to the inner space of the vehicle and not simply a door on the back.
The same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine drives the power core for each of the three HR-V models and its continuously variable transmission built specifically for it. When you order a front drive HR-V, you have a choice of six-speed manual or the CVT automatic.
All 2016 Honda HR-V trims come standard with four-wheel ABS, fold-flat “Magic” seats, rear view safety camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, front and side airbags, daytime running lamps, hill-start assist (HSA), stability/traction control, electronic braking, power windows/doors, and air conditioning.
Honda has included some notable luxury features with the EX, such as a push button starter and “Lane Watch” blind-spot warning activation when you engage the right-turn blinker.
As the HR-V is impressively well designed, inside and out, and more than accommodating in overall comfort for both front and rear passengers, there are just far too many features to discuss in a single article. Please do join us next week as we focus on the interior design and features, fleshing out all that Honda has managed to stack onto an equally well-built and impressive support structure
Honda designed the 2016 HR-V to provide maximum safety for not only those within but near the vehicle as well. Standard and available driver-assistive technologies such as Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)1 with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, and the Honda LaneWatch. While standard passive-safety features such as SmartVent® front side airbags and side curtain airbags with rollover sensor help protect occupants in a collision. The next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure makes the HR-V more compatible with other vehicles in a collision, while also incorporating numerous design features designed to mitigate injuries to pedestrians in the event of a collision.
The HR-V was awarded a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
The 2016 Honda HR-V is covered by a comprehensive 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. Additional benefits of ownership include Honda Roadside Assistance, which provides free 24-hour roadside assistance during the 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty term.
